The Delight of Carrots
Harvesting carrots was my delight today. We had three rows of them to pull up. We didn’t have to search for the biggest ones, we were just to pull them all up. We planted rainbow carrots, so they came up cream, orange, yellow, and purple. If we cut the skin of the purple ones, they were deep orange inside. Some of the carrot seeds were planted to close together, so they came up all tangled together in a love dance. Some carrots grew around rocks or other hard objects and came up with two “legs” or more. Sometimes the “legs were twisted together in very human-like ways. And I could smell them. They had that tangy, green smell that carrot greens always have. Bunching them together for the families that will pick up their boxes tomorrow was beautiful as well. I tried to bunch them so that everyone got the rainbow and everyone got some funky carrots. I hope they are as delighted as I was. Written on June 23, 2023.
